Correspondence

This dataset contains details of 1351 correspondence files between Angus & Robertson and the authors of their early children’s books.

These files are contained within the Angus & Robertson Archive: Publishing Files and Associated Papers, 1858-1933 (ML MSS 314, Volumes 2-90), located at the State Library of New South Wales. The files were arranged alphabetically by the named of the author.

Explanation of terms in the dataset:

  • Call Number: document’s location within the Angus & Robertson Archive, providing the collection, volume, item and page numbers
  • Relevant Author: Name of the author
  • Sender: Person who wrote/authored the letter. Formatted as “Surname, First Name.” Most of the Angus & Robertson letters indicate the identity of the individual correspondent in the top left-hand corner
  • Recipient: Addressee of the letter. Formatted as “Surname, First Name.” Where a nickname was used in the letter, the full name is still listed
  • Date: Date of letter where known. Formatted as DD/MM/YYYY
  • Year: Year of letter. If the date was unknown an approximate year has been given, based on the document’s relative position in the archive and the content of the letter
  • Format: Document type – handwritten or typed letter, or other archival material such as telegrams, articles, cards, accounts, cheques, Reader Reports, and manuscripts.
